Creative Commons & Image Attributions

Some of the images and audio used on the Soundhouse Music Alliance site have been accessed under Creative Commons licensing. There are a range of CC licenses that allow the copyright owners to give access to their material under various conditions. These conditions range from the need for the end user to only Attribute the copyright owner (i.e state who the original is done "by"), through to the highest level of Creative Commons restriction, comprising Attribution / By, Non-Commercial, No-Derivitives. This level of Creative Commons licensing requires the end user to

• "Name" the copyright owner (Attribution / By)
• Not gain any income from the material (Non-Commercial)
• Not make any changes or create any new material from the original material (No-Derivitives)

There are a range of Creative Commons licenses and combinations of licenses.

This means that if, for example, a musician licenses their music under Creative Commons Attribution / By, you are allowed to use that music for any purpose you wish, with the only proviso being that you Attribute the copyright owner (usually the musician). Likewise if a photographer releases one of their photos under the Creative Commons Attribution, Share-Alike licence, any work that you create using their image will need to be Attributed to the original owner and you will need to Share your new work under the same Creative Commons licensing.

A Video Explaining Creative Commons Licensing

Mayer and Bettle explain what Creative Commons is and how it works. The video is by Blackbrow, with animation Pete Foley and with sound and music by Chris Perren. The project was co-ordinated by Elliott Bledsoe, from Creative Commons Australia at QUT.

The animation was commissioned for the QUT Smart Train, which was launched in Brisbane on Sunday 15 May 2005 on its 5 week journey around Queensland.
